NEW RELEASE

HARD LOT was released on, August 7, and available on these channels:
Hard Lot is a collection of songs about people in broken towns, barrooms, coal country, on dark highways and, south of the border, looking for love, running from it, or trying to live without it.
The songs begin with a detail, a place, and a character caught at a moment when something is in the offing. Some are reckless, some are wounded, and most are responsible for at least some of their own trouble. None of them are entirely invented.
These recordings have been with me for some years: songs written over time, newly assembled and remastered.

Fools In Love
Fools In Love
Verse
Well the phone rings and it’s you
Sayin’ I really need to see you tonight
And I’m holed up in this beer joint
Tryin’ to keep my mind off what I know ain’t right
But then I’m drivin’ in this truck
Drivin’ like a man with demons on his tail
Cause I can’t live without your touch
I’ve tried, and every time I fail
Chorus
I’ve seen a lot of fools before
And most of them were fools in love
You try to ride that train that never stops
You try to live between the ticks of the clock
Verse
I’ve had a belly full of runnin’ ‘round
But I just can’t stay away from you
We’re like a hand inside a glove
No one fits the way we do
But then it’s 4 AM and I’m sneakin’ home
Tryin’ to make some sense of what I do
I feel guilty just for breathin’
But every breath I take is for you
Chorus
Bridge
I’ve seen a lot of fools in love
And mostly what they’re thinkin’ of
Is that single moment every night
It’s that single moment every night
It’s that single moment every night
When the phone rings and it’s you
Sayin’ I really need to see you tonight
The Sea of Cortez
The Sea of Cortez
Manny lives alone
On the Sea of Cortez
Says Presidente Brandy
Is the only friend he has
He sits on the beach
With a long-distance stare
Like he’s counting all the stars
Or remembering a prayer
Or the way he used to feel
Before his wife ran off
The love of his life
She'd just had enough
Lipstick on his coffee cup
That won’t wash off
Manny’s hands don’t work no more
So he sold all his guitars
And he dropped-kicked the radio
Cause he was sick of all those car ads
Now there’s nothing but silence, Presidente and the Sea of Cortez
Manny played guitar
In the cafes and barras
But his wife Madalena
Put the money in the jar
She had a voice like an angel
And a body made for sin
She’d draw the campesinos
And they’d would really pack them in
At the end of the show
She’d let her hair fall down
Manny’d strike that final chord
Like a drunken clown
And all the hands were clapping
But there was not a sound
Cause Manny’s brain hit overload
And the room just spun away
Madalena helped him home
But that night she didn’t stay
Now there’s nothing but silence, Presidente and the Sea of Cortez
Bridge
Every year the sea swallows more of the beach
And Madalena’s face is just a memory
And oh how that sweet music plays
But it’s just out of reach
Long Gone
Long Gone
Intro
I’ve got a roadmap if you need it
I heard you ask that waitress
how to get somewhere
I looked up from my co-cola
into six feet of green eyes and red hair
I don’t need a map I need a lift
Cause I ran out of gas
Back down the road a bit
She said “Knock back that drink
And pay your bill”
I’ll be out front
I’m in a blue Coupe de Ville
Verse
It’s nothing short of poetry
the way she moved
Smooth like a river flowin’ by
And she’s got a laugh like a melody
that you can’t get off your mind
And when she speaks to you she’ll touch your hand
and look you in the eye
Chorus
Boy you’re long gone
And heaven can’t help you now
You’re long gone
And I think this is gonna hurt
Verse
That southern wind is lickin’ at my bootheels
Her love is like a cut that just won’t heal
I thought if I got away
Make Macon by daybreak
Get back home
And get my head on straight
Chorus
But I’m still long gone
And heaven can’t help me now
I’m long gone
Baby I’m long gone
Bridge
I thought I’d found an angel
that could change my one-horse life
But she was only killin time
Waiting for a guy like me
that the wind blew in
So she could take me for a ride
Chorus
Two Tone Biscayne
Two-Tone Biscayne
Verse
There was a blindin’ light
Shinin’ in my face
Got up and put my boots on
I gotta leave this empty place
Going downtown, try to find a trace of you
Lookin’ for a two-tone Biscayne
Headin’ south on Highway 2
Verse
Last night was a ragin’ fight
Lotta drinkin’ goin’ on
You went out for cigarettes
And never came back home
You said my heart was colder than the moon
Lookin’ for a two-tone Biscayne
Headin’ south on Highway 2
Bridge
Girl, you’re hotter than Houston in the middle of June
You just lock and load when you’re in the mood
My momma told me and my sister told me too
You don’t need no crazy senorita
No—I don’t need no crazy senorita
Verse
There was a blindin’ light
Shinin’ in my eyes
The telephone’s ringin’
And you took me by surprise
You said “I’m staying down in Juarez—and it’s all because of you”
Lookin’ for a two-tone Biscayne
Headin’ south on Highway 2
Refrain
Lookin’ for a two-tone Biscayne
Headin’ south on Highway 2
Lookin’ for a two-tone Biscayne
Headin’ south on Highway 2
